The iPhone Duo Up Close: Apple's September Hardware, Spec by Spec

Apple announced four things at today's "Surprise and Shine" event: the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, and AirPods 5. Everything except the Duo reaches stores on Friday, September 18. The Duo lands October 23.


I wrote about the software side separately — iOS 27 ships Monday, and the MDM software update workload that stops working on 27.0. This piece is about the hardware, and mostly about the Duo, because it is the device that will generate the most questions and the fewest actual deployments.


Every figure below comes from Apple's own newsroom releases published today, September 9, 2026. Where a number came from somewhere else, the sentence says so.

What Apple actually built

A book-style folding iPhone. The 7.6-inch inner display (7.58" measured as a standard rectangle) and the 5.4-inch outer display (5.36" measured) are both Super Retina XDR with ProMotion, Always On and 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. They share an aspect ratio, and Apple says the outer display covers "90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro" — so folded, this is a normal-feeling phone rather than the cramped cover screen that has undermined most folding phones.


The silicon is the A20 Pro, the same 2-nanometer part as the iPhone 18 Pro: a 6-core CPU Apple rates at up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster, a dual 16-core Neural Engine with twice the compute for on-device models, 50 percent more unified memory bandwidth, and up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.


Most of Apple's engineering talk went into the fold, which is the right place for it. The frame is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish and a 3D-printed hinge cover; the hinge itself is "engineered from more than 100 components." The inner display sits under a nano-textured cover layer Apple describes as a custom polymer "with up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry," with high-strength glass above and below the folding panel and custom adhesives that let the layers "glide past one another like the pages of a book, relieving bend stress." There is a titanium plate at the bottom for rigidity, Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display, Ceramic Shield on the back, and an IP68 rating good for 6 metres for 30 minutes.


Battery is one high-energy cell on each side: up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer, and up to 24 hours of mixed usage when both get equal work. Fifty percent charge takes about 20 minutes wired — you need a 60W-or-higher USB-C cable — or about 30 minutes on MagSafe or Qi2.


The cameras are a 48MP Fusion main with an integrated 2x optical-quality telephoto, plus the same 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide as the 18 Pro, shooting 4K120 in Dolby Vision. A FaceTime camera under the inner display hides when it is not in use.


Storage runs 256GB to 2TB from $1,999, in star white and night sky. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with devices in stores Friday, October 23 across 70-plus countries and 28 more regions on 30 October.


The three specs that change your provisioning

Most of the above is interesting. Three details are operational, and they are the reason to read a spec sheet properly rather than skim a liveblog.


It ships on iOS 27.1, not 27.0. Apple's release says so plainly. If you are staging an upgrade and holding the fleet at 26.x, every Duo that arrives has already cleared your gate on day one — and a declarative policy written to target 27.0 will not match it. Decide now whether a Duo pilot is exempted from the standard ring or gets a ring of its own. This is a five-minute decision in September and an awkward one in late October.


It is eSIM-only, worldwide. No tray anywhere, on any model, in any region. Apple lists 500-plus supported carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. If any part of your provisioning or international-travel process still quietly assumes a SIM you can physically move — a drawer of spares, a local prepaid card for a contractor abroad, a swap to get someone working through a carrier problem — that path does not exist on this device. Test your carrier's eSIM transfer and QR provisioning at volume before you order any, not after.


It uses Touch ID in the side button, not Face ID. Apple's reasoning is obvious once you think about a device with two orientations and a camera that hides under the fold, but it is still a real change to your authentication story. Anything in your MFA guidance, conditional access documentation or app-level biometric policy that says "Face ID" now needs a second branch. Users re-enrol a fingerprint rather than a face. Apple Watch unlock still works.


Two smaller things worth noting. Split View puts two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time — genuinely useful, and a layout your line-of-business apps have never been tested against, so put it in front of whoever owns them now rather than in November. And iPhone Handoff lets users on supported carriers switch back and forth between two iPhones on the same number, which makes a pilot far easier to run because nobody has to commit cold to a first-generation foldable.


On that note: Apple has said a great deal about the hinge and the display stack, and none of it is a field failure rate. A folding display carried in a pocket for two years has no track record anywhere. Buy a handful with AppleCare and a real return path, and hold the volume decision until you have your own numbers rather than Apple's adjectives. At $1,999 the Duo is 67 percent more than an iPhone 18 Pro — this is an executive-and-pilot device, not a fleet standard, and it is worth saying so out loud before the requests start arriving.


Apple Pencil support is coming "later this year." Announced, not shipping. Don't plan on it.


iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max

These are the volume devices and the ones your refresh cycle actually cares about.


  • $1,199 and $1,299, 256GB through 2TB.

  • A20 Pro, 2-nanometer, with a dual 16-core Neural Engine Apple says delivers double the AI processing power of A19 Pro.

  • A C2 cellular modem with "meaningfully faster uploads" at 15 percent less energy, plus mmWave in the U.S. The N1 chip handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.

  • A 48MP Fusion main camera with a variable aperture — ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4, using six laser-cut blades. This is the genuinely new camera hardware this year.

  • The Dynamic Island now shows three Live Activities at once.

  • Apple Reference Image captures signed sensor data for photo authenticity verification. Worth flagging to anyone in your organisation who cares about the provenance of photographic evidence.

  • Face ID continues.

  • Pre-orders Saturday 12 September at 5 a.m. PT; in stores Friday 18 September across 65-plus countries, with 20 more regions on 25 September.


Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4

Series 12 starts at $399 in 42mm and 46mm, on the S11 chip, with up to 24 hours of all-day battery and 10 hours of outdoor workout. The real headline is the new Health Sensing System: new optical and electrical heart sensors, heart rate sampled every five seconds, HRV measured up to 24 times more often, and a 0–10 "Readiness" score.


Ultra 4 is $799 in natural and black titanium, also on S11, with more than two days of battery — up to 50 hours, 84 in Low Power Mode, and 45 hours at maximum extended workout. Satellite Emergency SOS, Find My and Messages are included free for two years with activation.


Both went up for pre-order today and reach stores Friday, September 18.


One thing to handle before any company-funded Watch programme: the Health Sensing System collects considerably more physiological data, considerably more often. That is a conversation with your privacy and HR people in advance, not a discovery afterwards.


AirPods 5

$129, or $149 with the wireless charging case. Four hours with ANC on the base model; the charging-case version gets up to five hours on a charge and 22 hours total. Apple claims up to 50 percent more external noise removed versus AirPods 4. Hands-free Siri AI access requires iOS 27, and Live Translation is included. Pre-orders opened today, in stores Friday, September 18.


Apple's release says nothing about Find My behaviour or anything enterprise-specific, so treat any asset-tracking assumption as unverified for now.


The practical takeaway

Order iPhone 18 Pro for the standard refresh — that is the fleet device, and 18 September is close enough that the paperwork should start this week. Treat the Duo as a funded pilot of a handful of units, not a catalogue item, until a first-generation folding display has proven itself on your users' hips rather than in Apple's press release.


And do two cheap things now, while there is no time pressure: confirm your eSIM provisioning path works at volume with your carrier, and add a Touch ID branch to your MFA and enrolment documentation. Both take an afternoon in September. Both are genuinely painful to be missing on 23 October, when the first Duo lands on an executive's desk and they expect it to just work.
